Psoriasis and PsA: New Dietary Recommendations Issued
The National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board has issued dietary recommendations for patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).
The new recommendations were composed following a review of literature included in previous systematic reviews, along with additional primary literature from January 1, 2014, to August 31, 2017, from MEDLINE. All literature included in the present review had assessed the effect of diet on psoriasis.

Ultimately, data from 55 studies were included in the present analysis. Of the 77,577 total participants, 4534 had psoriasis.
Following their review, the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board recommended the following:
- Overweight and obese patients with psoriasis should undergo dietary weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet (strong recommendation).
- A gluten-free diet may be beneficial for patients who test positive for serologic markers of gluten sensitivity (weak recommendation).
- Certain foods, nutrients, and dietary patterns may impact psoriasis, according to low-quality data.
- Overweight and obese patients with PsA should receive vitamin D supplementation and undergo dietary weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet (weak recommendation).
- Dietary interventions and standard medical therapies for psoriasis and PsA should always be used in conjunction.
“These dietary recommendations from the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board will help guide clinicians regarding the utility of dietary interventions in adults with psoriatic diseases,” the authors of the recommendations wrote.
